Opposition tables six resolutions for debate

Important issues need to be discussed during this session

March 15, 2005

Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says six Private Member’s Resolutions were tabled this afternoon for debate in the House of Assembly. The six resolutions dealt with crab production quotas, FPI’s Income Trust, the Hay Report, issues related to Abitibi Consolidated’s mills in Grand Falls-Windsor and Stephenville, education issues and the crisis situation developing in rural areas of the province.

"Tomorrow will be our first opportunity to directly challenge this government in the House of Assembly on the many issues that have arisen over the past few months," said Mr. Grimes. "These six resolutions deal with some of the issues that have not been appropriately addressed by our provincial government. It is now time to get answers from the Premier and find out exactly where each government member stands on these issues of importance.

"Our first private member’s debate will take place tomorrow afternoon. Each of these issues is very significant and it will be a tough decision to choose one to be debated first. These issues are of such importance to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador that they need to be brought forward immediately. While we will address these issues during question period, debates in the House of Assembly will ensure that the people of the province know exactly where their representatives stand on an issue.

"The people of the province can expect to see a hard-hitting session of the House of Assembly. It is no longer acceptable for this government to run and hide from these issues. They have had a year and a half to fulfill their election commitments, but failed to do so in many instances. Communities are dying, services are being reduced and the future of many regions of this province will depend on the decisions this government will make in the coming months.

"Each government member will have to be accountable for these decisions. We will ensure they understand the ramifications of each government decision, and they will ultimately be the people who will have to face their constituents."
