Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says he is hopeful that tomorrow’s budget
will be a balanced approach that will see new social investments, while
ensuring there is no cash deficit for the coming fiscal year. "Over the
past number of weeks, it appears government is willing to make some much
needed social investments that were neglected over the past 16 months," said
Mr. Grimes. "We will be watching to ensure the right investments are made
for the coming year. While deficit reduction is important, it must be
balanced with investments in the services and programs used by the people of
Newfoundland and Labrador on a daily basis.
"Decisions will have to be made related to new and cancelled initiatives.
The cancer clinic in Grand Falls-Windsor remains a priority, various drugs
for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Arthritis should
receive coverage, the new hospital in Grand Bank should get the necessary
funding to proceed, new investments in education must be made. There are
many priorities, I hope government will recognize the many needs and make
the right decisions.
"During the last provincial election campaign, the Premier made promises
related to health care, education, rural development, and many other issues.
Just as the people of this province had a right to demand that the Prime
Minister keep his election promise on the Atlantic Accord, they have a right
to demand that the Premier keep his election promises as well. I hope the
Premier realizes the importance of these statements when the budget is read
tomorrow afternoon.
"We will be watching the decisions of this government and listen to the
concerns of the public. We will also give credit for good investments and
criticize areas that could use some improvement. This year’s budget will
give some indication of where this government will place their priorities
over the next 12 months."
