Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District of Burgeo - La Poile, says he has
negotiated with the Minister of Environment and Conservation to provide an
alternative identification process for applicants of big game licences in
the 2005 draw. "When this year’s big game applications were distributed, I
received a large number of calls from people who did not have driver’s
licences," said Parsons. "I would like to inform any resident of the
province who does not have a driver’s licence that they can submit their
applications without a driver’s licence number, provided they include a
signed letter allowing the minister to verify residency using their income
tax information.
"This problem is especially serious in isolated areas of the province
where some people do not have driver’s licences. I raised this issue with
the minister because I found it unacceptable that a resident of La Poile,
for example, would have to take a ferry to Rose Blanche, then drive over two
hours to Corner Brook to have a picture ID taken. Government has an
obligation to make services accessible to the public.
"I am calling on the Minister of Environment and Conservation today to
clarify these new rules for all hunters in the province."
