Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says he is very disappointed that all
government MHAs voted against an Opposition motion that would have asked
government to remove the controversial crab production quota system from the
table for at least one year until government fulfills its promise to consult
with fish harvesters. The motion was defeated in the House of Assembly
Wednesday afternoon. "Today’s debate was a great opportunity for
government MHAs to stand up and voice the concerns of their constituents on
the crab production quota system," said Mr. Grimes. "It is unfortunate that
government members once again turned their backs on the people they are
supposed to represent. This was a free vote in the House of Assembly and the
Premier said there would be no repercussions for those voting against the
proposed system.
"Yesterday, I asked the question whether these members would vote with
the people who elected them, or turn their backs on the very people they are
supposed to represent. It is unfortunate they decided to turn their backs on
the same people who elected them to the House of Assembly to stand up for
their rights.
"Our office has been flooded with e-mails and faxes from concerned
citizens. These are from mayors, community leaders and business people from
Tory districts who are frustrated with the lack of representation they are
getting from their members. Our caucus continues to present petitions and
attend meetings with individuals who cannot get their member to stand up on
the government side of the House of Assembly. Today’s vote is another slap
in the face to these people.
"Government MHAs that represent fishing communities will have to justify
their decision in their own way. However, it is unfortunate that these
individuals are following the lead of the Premier like sheep, while ignoring
the concerns of their people. With a free vote, and no repercussions as
promised by the Premier, government members should have sided with their
constituents. I’m certain this vote will be remembered in two years time
when these same members once again knock on doors seeking re-election."
