Opposition Leader Roger Grimes says his 16 years in public life were very
rewarding and enjoyable, however, he feels it is now time to step aside and
allow a new leader to take the reigns of the Liberal Party and provide an
opportunity for a new MHA to work on behalf of the people of Exploits
District. Grimes will be resigning as Leader of the Official Opposition,
Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for the
District of Exploits effective noon Wednesday, June 1st, 2005.
"I have very much enjoyed all of my experiences over the past 16 years in
politics," said Mr. Grimes. "I especially wish to thank the people of
Exploits District who have given me the privilege of representing them in
the House of Assembly since 1989. I also want to take this opportunity to
thank the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for their confidence while I
served as Leader of the Official Opposition, Minister of several
departments, and Premier of the province.
"While I am proud of the many accomplishments that the Liberal Party, and
I as a member, have achieved over the past 16 years, I feel it is time for
me to pursue other personal interests and opportunities. After consulting
with family and friends, I have decided that a new leader should now take on
the ongoing work of challenging the current government and preparing for the
next election.
"While I have decided to leave public office, I will remain a strong
supporter of the Liberal Party. I feel that the policies and actions of the
current government are hurting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and
destroying rural parts of our province. This government must continue to be
challenged on a daily basis by a strong and effective Opposition, something
I am sure the new interim leader and caucus will continue to provide.
"Over the next couple of days, members of the Liberal Caucus and
Executive Board will discuss who will become the interim leader of the
party, and what provisions will be in place for any potential leadership
convention that may take place in the future. I fully expect a new interim
leader will be named and in place by Wednesday.
"I have fully enjoyed my political career and I once again want to thank
all of my supporters. It was an honour and privilege to serve the people of
Newfoundland and Labrador."
