Foote pleased upgrades to Route 220 will take place

October 18, 2005

Judy Foote, MHA for the District of Grand Bank, says she is pleased that Transportation Minister Tom Rideout reversed an earlier decision to cancel road work previously scheduled to be completed on Route 220 near St. Lawrence.

"On an open line program this morning, Minister Rideout confirmed that road work scheduled for Route 220 will indeed take place this year," said Ms. Foote. "This road work was recently cancelled by government even though it was announced in this year’s roads program. I am very pleased that the minister listened to the Mayor of St. Lawrence, the people of the Burin Peninsula and took my Friday press release seriously. This road upgrade was needed badly as Route 220 is a major highway that is used by students going to school, people using the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre and workers who commute to work in the area.

"While this project should not have been cancelled in the first place, the main issue now is that it get done this year. Government must act diligently to ensure the work is completed in the next few weeks.

"I will continue to monitor this situation to ensure Minister Rideout keeps this commitment to the people of the Burin Peninsula. Hopefully next year the minister will acknowledge the real need of road work investment in the District of Grand Bank and make the appropriate funds available."
