Parsons reiterates call for brush cutting program on Burgeo Highway

August 14, 2006

Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile, is reiterating his call to the Minister of Transportation and Works to commence a brush cutting operation on the Burgeo Highway to improve the safety of motorists using this road.

Route 480, also known as the Burgeo Highway, requires significant brush cutting operations to push tree growth away from the sides of the highway. As recently as this weekend, a significant car accident took place that was a direct result of overgrowth of alders and trees along the highway.

"I have written the Minister of Transportation and Works regarding the deplorable conditions of brush growth along the Burgeo Highway," said Mr. Parsons. "While the minister has committed to look at the problem, what the people using this highway really need is a clear and immediate commitment that a brush cutting program will take place as soon as possible.

"This past weekend a serious accident took place along the highway. Overgrowth of brush along the highway was singled out as a contributing factor to this incident and immediate action is needed to prevent any further accidents. The current dangers faced by motorists are unacceptable and must be addressed by government before someone is seriously injured or killed.

"I call upon Minister Hickey to initiate a brush cutting program along Route 480 immediately. The people using this highway must be protected and their safety must be a priority. Any further delay is only inviting a tragedy to occur."
