Jones disappointed amendment for Labrador on Fisheries Collective Bargaining Act not accepted by government

February 23, 2006

Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, says she is disappointed that government refused to accept an amendment to exclude Labrador from the current changes on the Fisheries Collective Bargaining Act. Jones says Labrador issues are different from those on the Island as a result of market conditions and water temperatures.

"I am very disappointed that this amendment was defeated by government," said Ms. Jones. "The fish harvesters on the south coast of Labrador, especially the Labrador Shrimp Company Limited, believe this legislation will place them in a very volatile position. The processors on the Island portion of the province will now dictate what contract Labrador harvesters will have to work under, even though their market and fishery conditions are very different.

"I am also very disappointed that the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) union have turned their backs on their membership in Labrador. With the concerns that have been raised by their Labrador members, I would have expected more representation from the union and Earle McCurdy. I am very concerned that this legislation will now have a negative impact on the fishing industry in my district.

"I fully expect government to realize their mistake in the coming months after witnessing the impact this legislation will have on the Labrador fishery. The decision of this government to ignore Labrador once again demonstrates their lack of understanding of issues that are specific to our region."
