Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says he is disappointed with the squabbling
between Fishery Products International (FPI) and Minister Tom Rideout
regarding the release of the results of FPI’s internal review. It appears
that government is waiting for the company to release their internal review,
while FPI appears willing to wait until government releases their audit of
the company’s books. "Hundreds of FPI employees are waiting anxiously to
find out what will happen to their jobs," said Mr. Reid. "Government and the
company must release this information as soon as possible. The continuous
delays are creating anxiety amongst workers who are trying to plan for their
future. I am confident that both the company and government know what is
planned for FPI’s operations, but they are unwilling to share these plans
with the people of the province. I hope this is not a delaying tactic to
ensure this information is not released until after the current by-election
taking place in the District of Placentia-St. Mary’s.
"FPI originally stated that their review would be completed in early
January. Since that time the company has not been willing to comment on any
aspect of their review. Government’s silence has also been of concern. Both
government and the company have completed their respective reviews, and now
is the time to release the information without further delay."
