Yvonne Jones, Opposition Labrador Affairs Critic and MHA for the District of
Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, is welcoming the municipalities of Labrador to
the Labrador Straits for meetings over the next four days. "I am pleased
that the Labrador Straits has been chosen for this year’s combined councils
meetings," said Ms. Jones. "There are many issues in Labrador that need to
be addressed and I feel that my district is a good place to discuss these
issues. From Lower Churchill benefits, healthcare services and
transportation infrastructure, Labrador issues need to get more attention
from this government.
"In my district alone, people are angry with the lack of commitment by
this government to transportation infrastructure. The ferry service in the
Strait of Belle Isle must be improved, and I am hopeful that the minister
will listen to the people and extend next year’s schedule to the end of
January. The ferry service between Cartwright and Goose Bay must also be
expanded. The current service is not acceptable and a larger investment is
needed to ensure more trips are added to the route. In addition, the Trans
Labrador Highway and other road networks such as the highway between Red Bay
and Lodge Bay must get the necessary investment they require.
"Health care will also be a very significant issue at this year’s
meeting. People in Labrador must receive greater access to health services
in major centres such as Corner Brook and St. John’s. Financial assistance
must also be increased that will help cover travel costs for individuals
requiring medical treatments only available on the Island portion of the
province.
"I look forward to productive discussions with government and the
communities of Labrador during these meetings. There are many issues that
will be discussed over the next few days and I am hoping that government
representatives will get a first hand look at these issues and their
importance to Labradorians."
