Roland Butler, Opposition Education Critic and MHA for the District of Port
de Grave, says the recent suspension of two teachers for raising concerns
about teacher stress and lack of resources is disgraceful.
"Since the Williams Government took office, they have tried to quiet any
criticism of their government," said Mr. Butler. "Anyone who speaks out
against the premier or his government has to experience the wrath of Danny
Williams. Elizabeth Marshall and Fabian Manning are two obvious examples of
this approach.
"We have also witnessed the appointment of many of the premier’s friends
and supporters to key roles within government boards and agencies. These
appointments are nothing more than an attempt to put people into positions
of authority to silence any criticism that may be directed at government.
The CEO of the Eastern School District, Mr. Darin King, is a defeated Tory
candidate from the last election. Is it any surprise that he is the person
who is punishing teachers for speaking out against this government’s lack of
investment and cutbacks to the education system in this province?
"The approach of this government to intimidate people into silence is
simply unacceptable. This is the approach used in non-democratic and
communist countries who do not have freedom of speech. It is shameful that
the people who are lobbying on behalf of our children are punished for their
efforts.
"Where is Minister Burke on these unfair suspensions? Why hasn’t she
stepped in and overruled the board? This government and minister have
certainly proven that they do not mind interfering in board activities. By
not getting involved, it is obvious that she supports this decision. We live
in a democratic country, not a dictatorship. I suggest both Mr. King and
Minister Burke realize this fact before moving forward with such
heavy-handed actions in the future."
