Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, says
before government moves forward with any deal on the Lower Churchill, she
wants to see extensive benefits for the people of Labrador, and the Metis
Nation included in an Impact and Benefits Agreement (IBA). "Government
announced today that the province will be leading the development of the
Lower Churchill," said Ms. Jones. "While this concept is good, there are
still many questions that must be answered on behalf of the people of
Labrador. There has been much talk about maximizing benefits for the
province, but what exactly will this mean for Labrador? Will the people on
the coast have access to cheaper electricity? Will this power be used to
attract new industry? These details need to be made public so Labradorians
can judge for themselves whether this will be a good deal and in their best
interest.
"I am also calling upon government to include the Metis Nation in any
negotiations regarding this project. The Metis must receive an IBA and I
have yet to hear the Premier or the Minister of Natural Resources commit to
this process. The Metis must be recognized and their rights respected before
any development takes place.
"While I am willing to give government’s concept for development of the
Lower Churchill a chance, I am hopeful they will recognize the importance
Labrador will play in such a development and provide the appropriate level
of benefits. Consultation on this project must start immediately and be
inclusive of all Labradorians. Without hearing and acting on the
expectations of our people in detail, I fear government will move forward
without adequately addressing the Labrador issues."
