Opposition calls for improved home heating rebate program

Roland Butler, MHA for the District of Port De Grave, is calling on government to immediately bring forward an improved home heating rebate program that effectively addresses the increased costs facing consumers this winter.

"Over the past few weeks, I have received many calls from concerned individuals who are struggling to afford the continued increases in the cost of heating their homes," said Mr. Butler. "Today, the price of home heating oil increased once again which will put an even greater burden on individuals who are living on a limited income and must choose between necessities such as food and heat. This is unacceptable and government must announce their intentions regarding a home heating rebate program so these individuals can start planning for the winter months.

"The price of oil is the highest it has ever been and the average consumer is feeling it directly in their pocketbook. To ensure the people of Newfoundland and Labrador do not have to suffer from these increases, an effective program must be developed that addresses the needs of our lower and middle income earners and takes into account the higher heating costs facing consumers this winter. After speaking to people who have contacted my office, they feel that the threshold level for qualification and the rebate amount should be increased.

"Our provincial government has more money than any time since confederation. Most of this money is coming directly from offshore oil revenues and some of this wealth should be shared with the consumers of this province. Government should not delay any longer; an improved program should be announced as soon as possible to help people plan their spending for the coming winter months."
