Carbonear-Harbour Grace should get 2008 Summer Games February 16, 2007 George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, says the towns of Carbonear and Harbour Grace should be selected to host the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, and he will continue lobbying on behalf of this region to win their bid for the games. "Our region hosted the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in 1992 and they were a huge success," said Mr. Sweeney. "Our residents have proven that we can organize these games effectively and our time has come once again to be selected as the host region for 2008. "It makes economic sense to have the games hosted in the Conception Bay North region as our facilities are in place and we have the expertise in organizing these games. In 1992, many new facilities were built to accommodate the summer games. We have baseball, softball and soccer fields, a state-of-the-art track and field facility and an impressive swimming pool. The investment from these games will help maintain these facilities for years and benefit the youth of our region. "It has been 15 years since Carbonear and Harbour Grace hosted the summer games and I firmly believe our time has come once again. We have proven that our infrastructure and services are more than sufficient, and our hospitality is second to none. I encourage government to make an announcement on these games very soon and I join with many in the Conception Bay North region in lobbying government to award this very important event to our area."
