Government must invest in long-term care in the Conception Bay North area February 2, 2007 George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is calling on government to provide full funding for the citizens of the Conception Bay North area to address the needs of seniors and long- term care patients. Mr. Sweeney believes that Carbonear General Hospital has experienced added stress on resources since the addition of long-term care residents to the hospital workload. Mr. Sweeney also believes that the residents of Conception Bay North have a right to receive care in their own region, instead of being forced to move to other areas such as St. John's. "We have a need for a new seniors home in this area," said Mr. Sweeney. "We've already seen the Alzheimers unit close and those patients forced to relocate to St. John's. The Interfaith and Harbour Lodge nursing homes are filled to capacity and our hospital is being forced to deliver long-term care services. Staff at Carbonear General Hospital are under increased pressure as they try and cope with this increased workload. A new seniors home in the area would certainly help address this problem. "We are now in the budgetary process and decisions will soon be made for funding priorities. I encourage residents of our area to pressure government to make an investment in long-term care. The population of the Conception Bay North area is aging and government can no longer ignore the needs of our seniors."
