Sweeney asks more questions about the new MCP program

February 6, 2007

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is asking for an update on what is happening with the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan (MCP) in the light of some recent problems. Long delays in receiving new cards and attached expiry dates on the cards have constituents wondering what's next for the MCP program.

Since the new program was first announced on May 11, 2006, problems have been arising. It appears that the program is well-behind in getting the required information and MCP cards out to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Sweeney says he has had numerous enquiries questioning the hold-up in getting valid cards out.

"Over the past several weeks, I have had calls from constituents raising questions on the new MCP program. In some cases, people are forced to pay for information MCP already has on record, and people who applied months ago have not received their cards. People are also asking me why their cards have expiry dates and whether government will charge a fee for the cards in the future," says Sweeney.

"I've had constituents told that baptismal certificates from their church were inaccurate and they are now being forced to spend $25.00 to attain a new certificate from government. I don't think it's right for government to be charging another user fee especially when government was using this information for years under the previous program.

"I call on Minister Wiseman to give the people of the province an update on the program. Will all cards be mailed out before March 31, 2007, and why are people being charged to replace information that is supposed to be on file?"
