Jones pleased with extension to ferry service January 12, 2007 Yvonne Jones, Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs and MHA for the District of Cartwright - L'Anse au Clair, is welcoming today's news that the ferry service between St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon will be extended for another 30 days. "Today's announcement is certainly good news for people living in southern Labrador," said Ms. Jones. "Over the past several years, the ice and weather conditions in the Strait of Belle Isle have improved and it is now possible to keep the ferry in operation for several weeks longer each year. "I encourage government to commit the necessary funding in this year's budget to extend the service on an ongoing basis. A full review of scheduling should also take place so residents will have confidence that the Apollo will be in service as long as ice and weather conditions permit. Many people on the coast of Labrador rely on this service and it should only be removed when conditions warrant such drastic action."
