Sweeney calls on government to stop ignoring Harbour Grace issues

January 12, 2007

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, says government is ignoring issues facing residents of Harbour Grace and the time has come to start making investments in the community.

Sweeney referenced the poor condition of Harvey Street in Harbour Grace; the need for water and sewer infrastructure throughout Harbour Grace and Riverhead; the need for traffic lights at the dangerous intersection of Harvey Street and the Veteran's Memorial Highway; and street lights that are needed in the Incinerator Road area.

"This government has made no effort or investment to improve infrastructure problems facing the people of Harbour Grace," said Mr. Sweeney. "Harvey Street has been completely ignored since the opening of the Veteran's Memorial Highway. Residents who drive through the town know first hand the dangers that are presented by the numerous potholes, cracks and ruts on the road. I have received many calls from angry residents who have done damage to their cars as a result of the poor driving conditions.

"Requests have been made for new water and sewer infrastructure throughout Harbour Grace and Riverhead. There is a pressing need to have these services upgraded and it appears government is dragging its feet in making a decision. If we are to encourage people to stay in our rural communities, government must make the appropriate investment in these vital services.

"In addition, the intersection at Harvey Street and Veteran's Memorial Highway requires a set of traffic lights. This section of highway is very dangerous and many consider it an accident waiting to happen. A simple stop sign is not sufficient to handle the large volume of traffic using this intersection and I fear that a tragedy will have to take place before government realizes the importance of placing traffic lights in this area.

"The Incinerator Road area is also in need of street lights. During the night time hours, this area is extremely dark and makes driving very difficult. Street lights would help improve the safety of this section of road.

"There are many issues facing the people of my district. Unfortunately, the people of Harbour Grace have not been a priority of the Williams Government. Instead, they continue to suffer from substandard roads and infrastructure and have seen very little investment from this government."
