Jones pleased with Combined Councils of Labrador meetings January 29, 2007 Yvonne Jones, Opposition Labrador Affairs Critic and MHA for the District of Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair, today congratulated the new executive of the Combined Councils of Labrador (CCL). "I have spent the last five days in Nain attending the 35th annual general meeting of the CCL ," said Ms. Jones. "There were a number of issues that were on the agenda such as the Trans-Labrador highway, the development of the Lower Churchill and the economic struggles of rural Labrador communities." Jones says she was pleased to see Stanley Oliver, a councilor from Happy Valley-Goose Bay elected as the new president. "Stanley has been involved with issues in all regions of Labrador over the years. He is knowledgeable and proactive in bringing the voice of the people to government. I am confident that he will provide good leadership for the municipalities in Labrador. I also want to thank outgoing president Ford Rumbolt, Mayor of Mary's Harbour, for his term as President of the CCL and for his years of service to the organization. I have been dealing with the CCL for the past 17 years in one capacity or another and Ford was always one of the main players in the organization. I want to thank him for his support and co-operation in dealing with issues of importance to municipalities in Cartwright-Lanse au Clair district. Ford has provided good and steady leadership to the organization through what has been a few very difficult years for municipalities. "With the exception of a mining boom in Labrador West and the excitement of the Nunatsiavut government, the economy of Labrador has become too stagnant, making little or no progress in fishery development, forestry or tourism opportunities and seeing nothing only lip service on issues like the Lower Churchill, the Trans-Labrador highway, municipal infrastructure and reduced marine service rates. It is time that this changed and that the Williams government put some real investment into Labrador. I look forward to working with the new executive of the combined councils on these and other issues."
