Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District of Burgeo La-Poile, says that he has now requested a meeting with the Minister of Transportation and Works John Hickey to present petitions from area residents urging government to carry out brush-cutting along the Burgeo Highway. The MHA has called upon the Minister several times to commence a cutting program to eliminate the dense brush along Route 480 since it has become a safety concern to travellers. A number of petitions relating to this issue were circulated throughout south coast communities and have been signed by hundreds of residents. AI have now collected these petitions urging government to act immediately on this issue and I am ready to present them to the Minister,A says Parsons. AThis is a serious concern for those who travel that 76 km stretch, particularly at night, and I am hopeful the Minister will appreciate the sense of urgency here and announce a program soon. Parsons points out that several accidents have already been attributed to the lack of a clear border along the highway which prevents a speedy response time to animals emerging from the dense brush. AI am receiving calls daily about this issue as people are still weary of travelling this route when their safety is compromised by this thick brush.@ AWhile I intend to present these petitions soon, I find it unfortunate that people would have to go to the extreme of having to sign them to urge government to look after their safety on the highway. Highway safety is government=s ultimate responsibility and to have to be pushed to address this issue shows a government that is not proactive, but always reactive in addressing issues that negatively affect people in this province.@
