Reid disappointed Fogo Island ferry rates not decreased more

March 12, 2007

Opposition Leader Gerry Reid, MHA for the District of Twillingate-Fogo, says he is disappointed that the ferry rates for residents of Fogo Island have only decreased by the amount that the Tory government increased them in the last three years and believes this conflicts with what the Tory government promised in their blue book prior to the 2003 general election. Reid is also disappointed that the rates charged for seniors and commercial vehicles of the Fogo Island route will not be decreased.

AWhile I am pleased that the rates have been rolled back, government certainly shouldn=t be patting themselves on the back,@ said Mr. Reid. AIn the past three years, this government increased the rates by 20 per cent and today they announced a 20 per cent reduction in passenger rates for Fogo Island. The rates charged to seniors and commercial vehicles did not change. As a matter of fact, the rates for the Fogo Island to Farewell run have only been brought back in line with what they were previous to the Tories taking office.

AThe rates charged to the residents of Change Islands have dropped significantly more. The rates charged for a vehicle and driver will go from $16.75 to $6.50 and the senior rate will go from $8.75 to $5.00. This is a step in the right direction, however, I still believe ferry rates are too high, especially for those living on Fogo Island.

AThis government gouged the people of Change Islands and Fogo Island for the past three years and it is about time they gave a break to these residents. Even though this decision was probably made because it is an election year, any reduction is welcome.@
