Federal government should provide aid March 12 , 2007

Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says in light of a recent decision by the federal government to provide $1 billion in aid to help western farmers, money should also be invested to assist fishery workers in Newfoundland and Labrador who are struggling because of industry challenges. AOn Friday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced significant funding to help struggling western farmers,@ said Mr. Reid. AThe prime minister stated this funding was necessary because costs associated with producing product have risen. Unfortunately, fishery workers from this province who are facing increased fuel prices, rising insurance costs, and high federal fees for licenses, observers and monitoring did not receive funding even though they are facing similar cost increases that are threatening their livelihoods. AOver the past couple of years, our fishing industry has faced many additional challenges. Increased costs, along with quota cuts, a strong Canadian dollar, and competition from China have all had a negative impact. If federal aid is to be distributed fairly to all those experiencing difficult times in our resource sector, I suggest our fishery also be considered for assistance. AIf the federal government is not willing to provide direct assistance, I ask them to consider an early retirement package. This has been a key recommendation that would help address many issues in our fishery. While Ottawa has not been willing to commit to this type of program, it would be a justified investment as compared to assistance given to western farmers. AI am also very disappointed in the silence of our provincial government on this issue. The premier seems willing to fight the federal government on every issue except the fishery. If the provincial government was serious about strengthening our fishery, now would be the time to make strong representation for an early retirement package.@ |
