Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says that athletes of this province deserve our heartfelt congratulations after their recent performances on the national and world stage, where Newfoundland and Labrador athletes have done so much to promote the province. AOur athletes had impressive performances at the Canada Winter Games, with athletes garnering several medals in figure skating and in boxing. The team of Matthew and Alexandra Young from Corner Brook captured bronze medals in pre-novice mixed pairs figure skating. Kaetlyn Osmond of Marystown captured bronze in the pre-novice single female figure skating category and Mponda Kalunga-loksa of St. John=s captured silver in boxing. Mr. Kalunga-loksa is a story of particular interest as he came from Africa for a fresh start in Canada after spending six years in a refugee camp. His accomplishments show that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can overcome great challenges and be successful on a national and world stage,@ said Mr. Reid. ABrad Gushue, Stacie Devereaux and their curling rinks did the province proud with their second place finishes. Their performance in this year=s Brier and World Juniors will once again stand out in people=s minds as great achievements in Newfoundland and Labrador sport. Through their accomplishments, they helped bring even more respect and pride to the province. AOur Memorial University Lady Sea Hawks basketball team also deserve congratulations as they won the bronze medal in CIS women=s basketball this past weekend. AIt was no easy feat to go up against the high calibre teams that our athletes faced these past few weeks. We join with all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in expressing congratulations to all athletes and their families. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors and hope that others can use their victories as examples of what can be achieved.@ |
