Reid thanks Thistle for her hard work and dedication

March 22, 2007

Opposition Leader Gerry Reid today thanked Grand Falls-Buchans MHA, Anna Thistle, for her hard work and commitment to her constituents, the people of the province and the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador over the past 12 years. In a news conference in Grand Falls-Windsor earlier today, Anna Thistle announced that she will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming October 9th provincial election.

AAnna had indicated for some time that she was uncertain about running a fourth term, and while I am disappointed, I respect her personal decision,@ said Mr. Reid. AAnna has certainly gained a reputation as a constituency MHA who always lobbied to have the issues of Grand Falls-Buchans addressed. Even as a government backbencher, Anna lobbied to bring forward social policy changes to allow disabled persons to apply for big game hunting licenses. She also worked to establish funding for autistic children and renal dialysis for the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre.

AEven when Anna was in Cabinet, she maintained her reputation of always being there for her constituents and returning every phone call. Recognizing that the Abitibi Paper Mill in Grand Falls-Windsor was the economic heartbeat of Central Newfoundland, her strong lobbying brought forward milestone legislation that tied provincial wood permits to the running of two paper machines at the Grand Falls Mill. When disaster hit the Town of Badger, she ensured that government=s compensation package for flood victims was fair and reasonable. Even with the disappointment of having the cancer clinic shelved by the Williams Government that she announced, she went on to fight until the decision was reversed.

AThe District of Grand Falls-Buchans have a true representative of the people. On behalf of the Liberal Caucus, I want to extend our sincere thanks to Anna for her contribution to the people of her district and also the Province. While Anna will not be running again, she will still perform her duties in the House of Assembly until October. I am proud to have her as a member of our team and I wish her well in whatever personal direction she chooses in the future.@
