Send Ambassador Sullivan to sealing demonstration: Opposition March 14, 2007George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear_Harbour Grace and Opposition Whip, says that Tom Rideout should strongly push the prime minister to reinforce the Newfoundland and Labrador government's pro-sealing actions in Ottawa by requesting that his newly appointed fisheries ambassador, Loyola Sullivan, attend the March 15th event. "If Tom Rideout and the premier refuse to go to Germany, then why doesn't the government of Newfoundland and Labrador request the presence of the new fisheries ambassador for Canada to be present at the Up the Anti counter_demonstration? It would be a great show of support for the province," states Sweeney. "This new ambassador is supposed to represent anyone who has concerns with the fishing industry in this country and represent those interests to the world. Yet, we don't know where the government of Canada's interests lie on the issue. It is time this government made that request to its counterpart in Ottawa and insist that we be provided effective representation on behalf of the central government. Isn't that why taxpayers are paying Ambassador Sullivan's salary? "Not only would this move provide an opportunity for the Canadian government to present its colours on the seal hunt issue, it would show that the position of Fishing Ambassador has some worth. Furthermore, it would also highlight the degree of cooperation that exists between the two levels of government; which, at this point, appears to be anything less than cooperative and effective."
