Thistle pleased with pension investment, calls for pension indexing to now be addressed

March 15, 2007

Anna Thistle, Opposition Finance and Treasury Board Critic and MHA for the District Grand Falls-Buchans, says she is pleased with today's announcement addressing the unfunded liabilities in the public sector pension plans and is now encouraging government to address concerns of public sector pensioners and the indexing of their pensions.

"Today's announcement is certainly good news for public sector employees and the their pension plans," said Ms. Thistle. "This initiative follows the approach of the Tobin and Grimes governments of addressing the unfunded pension liability problem. It is encouraging to see this investment and what appears to be stabilized plans at a lower interest rate.

"Now that the unfunded liability has been addressed, I am calling on Minister Marshall to tackle the concerns of public sector pensioners and their request to have their pensions indexed. There is obviously money available to government as demonstrated by today's investment. They should use some of this funding to help our pensioners, many of whom are on a fixed income and struggling to make ends meet.

"Our pensioners have contributed to the growth of our province and I would encourage government to make this investment in the upcoming budget. Without a raise based on inflation, the incomes of many of these hard-working individuals will be well below the poverty line."
