Where is the replacement forestry headquarters for Winterland?

March 2, 2007

Judy Foote, MHA for the District of Grand Bank and Opposition Critic for Industry, Trade and Rural Development, says that there has been no move by government to build a new forestry headquarters in Winterland despite funding being allocated for it in the 2005 forestry budget.

"Despite repeated requests to have the existing forestry building replaced, and promises to do so by the PC government, the employees continue to work in conditions that are totally unacceptable," said Ms. Foote. "The failure of the government to act on yet another promise given to the people on the Burin Peninsula raises the question as to how necessary the government thinks these forestry services are in the area. My fear is that this will be yet another service that will be discontinued on the Burin Peninsula.

"When the Minister of Natural Resources was questioned during Resource Committee hearings in April of 2005, and told that the present facilities were infested with mice and in dire need of replacement, I was given assurances that this was a priority for government. Now we hear that the workers are using a trailer to perform their daily tasks because of those conditions. This is unacceptable and the people of the Burin Peninsula deserve better.

"I call on government to live up its commitment to replace the forestry headquarters in Winterland and allocate funding for it in the 2007 budget, two years after money was initially allocated and obviously used for other purposes."
