Opposition wants action on teacher allocation
May 15, 2007

Roland Butler, Opposition Education Critic and MHA for the District of Port De Grave, continued to press government today in the House of Assembly to move quickly to implement task force recommendations on teacher allocations, as well as improvements to the ISSP  (Individualized Student Support Plan) Pathways model for students with special needs.

AThis minister can implement these recommendations before the start of the new school year in September, but she is dragging out the process,@ says Butler.

Earlier this week, Butler asked the Education Minister if she had received recommendations related to a review of teacher allocations in this province. The minister was very careful in her answer saying she would receive the Afinal@ report within the next couple of weeks. AThe truth is the minister is already aware of what will be recommended and she is dragging out the process and not implementing these recommendations in a timely manner.@

The Liberal MHA says the latest delays in improving teacher allocations are a continuation of the shell game this government and this minister has been playing  with teacher allocations in this province for the past three years. AParents and students have been waiting to have the recommendations contained in this report acted upon immediately. There is an obvious need to address the special circumstances facing both rural schools and growth areas.@

The Minister of Education established the two commissions in August of last year to review both the Teacher Allocation Model and ISSP/Pathways Model. The reviews are the result of consultations with people who work and volunteer daily in the education system and the recognition by government that the current models are no longer effectively serving the needs of students and teachers.
