Opposition motion to hold public IEC meetings approved

May 2, 2007

Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District Burgeo-Lapoile, says the severance package paid to Joan Cleary, the former President of the Bull Arm Site Corporation, proves once again that Premier Williams looks after his friends at all cost. It was revealed earlier today that Joan Cleary was paid $40,000 after her dismissal from the corporation.

Last fall, Joan Cleary was asked for her resignation for breaking the Public Tendering Act and giving contracts to political friends without following proper legal procedures. While government says she was entitled to the money under her contract, the fact remains that government made special arrangements to ensure she was entitled to receive this $40,000 payment.

AMs. Cleary was fired for breaking the guidelines of the Public Tender Act,@ said Mr. Parsons. AAs a send off present, government decided to give Ms. Cleary  $40,000 in severance for less than a year=s service. Who in the public service, with less than one year service and was fired, would receive such a significant payment? Once again, similar to the fibre-optic deal and a long list of other examples, the premier will bend the rules to look after his own friends, relatives and business associates.

AI also find it very ironic that Joan Cleary is now seeking the candidacy for the PC Party in the District of Bellevue. I find it very distasteful that the premier, after dismissing Ms. Cleary for being incompetent and not following public tendering laws, would be willing to accept her as a candidate. If she wins the nomination, he will be asking the people to support an individual that was dismissed because of her questionable activities at Bull Arm. Once again it shows the arrogance of the premier and his government.@
