Andersen calls for long-haul ferry rates to be announced May 7, 2007 Wally Andersen, Opposition Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Critic and MHA for the District of Torngat Mountains, is calling on government to announce this year's long-haul ferry rates for freight. "The north coast of Labrador is very dependent upon the long-haul ferry service," said Mr. Andersen. "I have questioned the minister as to when the rates will be released, but I have still received no definitive response. Our navigation season opens in a little over a month and it is necessary for residents and businesses in my district to have a clear picture on how much they will pay to transport goods. "With the isolation of our communities, a substantial amount of goods are delivered by ship during the summer months. With no clear freight rates in place, my constituents are finding it difficult to budget for the cost of shipping goods. This is an issue that requires immediate attention and government should no longer delay on this issue. "Time is of the essence on this matter and it is only fair to give my constituents advance notice of freight rates. I call upon government to make this announcement as soon as possible and ensure that consideration is given to the situation of residents on the north coast of Labrador."
