On the eve of the province’s two by-elections, Opposition Leader
Yvonne Jones is urging voters in the districts of Cape St. Francis and
Baie Verte-Springdale to give strong consideration to the need for an
expanded Opposition to challenge and keep the Williams Government
accountable to the people.
The by-elections in the districts of Baie Verte-Springdale and Cape St.
Francis will take place tomorrow, August 27th, with Liberal
candidates Shaun Lane and Tonia Mercer-Power asking voters to support a
representative who will stand up and ensure issues are heard.
"The Liberal Party has fielded two tremendous candidates in these
by-elections and I have great confidence in their abilities to represent
the people of Baie Verte-Springdale and Cape St. Francis," said Ms.
Jones. "These candidates would be an asset in the House of Assembly
and would ensure that government operates in a more effective, responsible
and accountable manner."
Jones points out that there are many issues facing people in both
districts that are reflective of problems throughout the province. Road
and municipal infrastructure, health care, drinking water, government
services and outmigration have been topics of concern to voters in both
districts.
"This government is sensitive to criticism and issues only get
addressed once they are raised publicly. Having a strong Opposition voice
in the legislature will ensure that both provincial and local issues are
brought to the attention of government for immediate action. Our caucus is
not silenced and members are free to raise issues and stand up for their
constituents.
"It is important for everyone to exercise their democratic right
and take the opportunity to vote in tomorrow’s by-elections. I certainly
encourage voters to examine the issues and the candidates to determine who
they feel will best represent them in the House of Assembly."
