Government must begin addressing health care issues in Labrador West

Government can no longer ignore the health care challenges being faced in Labrador West and immediate action is required, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones. Citing problems with a chronic shortage of family physicians and the lack of movement in constructing a new hospital, Jones says the time has come for government to stop the rhetoric and put an action plan in place.

"I have spoken to people in Labrador West who, because of a lack of family physicians in the area, are forced go to the emergency room at the hospital to get prescriptions filled or have their blood pressure monitored," said Ms. Jones. "This is placing extra stress on the doctors in the area, and is certainly doing nothing to attract and retain prospective physicians who are interested in practicing in this region."

Jones noted that the Physician Recruitment Advisory Committee (PRAC) has raised concerns about the level of service currently being offered in Labrador West. Physicians believe there should be a minimum of 8 doctors practicing in the area, but there are currently only five. Another two doctors are planning to leave in the coming months.

"This diminished level of service is threatening the safety of patients and placing excess burden on the resources available at the hospital. Government has to begin looking at solutions in places such as Labrador West where a team approach to health care services that includes other professionals such as nurse practitioners will help alleviate the pressures being faced. There is also a need to examine whether salaried positions would be preferable for some doctors who may want to set up practice in the area.

"As demonstrated at last night’s health care rally, the people of Labrador West are fed up with a lack of service and the slow progress on the construction of a new hospital. Health Minister Ross Wiseman must begin taking these issues more seriously and provide action, or the current crisis in our health care system will soon begin to spiral into chaos."
