Jones continues support for fishers affected by license buy-back program

Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones is again calling on the federal government to return millions in taxes that were collected in error from fish harvesters. Jones is supporting the efforts of those affected by the decision, including Elizabeth Harvey of Isle aux Morts, who continue to apply pressure on the federal government to correct this situation.

Under previous federal tax laws, settlements on the sale of fishery licenses were exempt from tax. Between 600-800 fish harvesters in the province were affected and are entitled to receive a collective refund of between $25-30 million.

"It is important that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador support the efforts of these fish harvesters in lobbying the federal government," said Ms. Jones. "These people are entitled to millions of dollars and we must continue to raise the profile of this issue so that our federal politicians get the message.

"I will continue to provide my support and lobby the federal government to ensure they live up to their responsibilities and rectify this situation."
