Butler again encourages government to bring forward mandatory snow tire legislation

Mandatory snow tire legislation should be brought forward in this province to protect the safety of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, says Opposition Government Services Critic Roland Butler. Butler raised the issue earlier today in the House of Assembly.

Under questioning from Butler, Government Services Minister Kevin O’Brien indicated that there was no proof that snow tires were better than all season tires. He also stated that some all season tires would actually be better than snow tires during Newfoundland and Labrador winters.

“I cannot understand where Minister O’Brien is getting his facts, all reports that I have seen indicate that snow tires are much safer and can significantly reduce accidents,” said Mr. Butler. “Even the Road Safety Vision 2010 initiative that our province has signed onto states that snow tires are safer during the winter months. Why the minister is trying to defend the effectiveness of all season tires during winter months is incomprehensible and foolhardy.

“I again encourage government to look at the safety issues associated with driving all season tires on our highways during the winter. Other provinces and countries with cold winter climates are moving towards mandatory snow tire legislation, and I feel it is time for Newfoundland and Labrador to take a similar approach.”

Butler recommends mandatory deadlines for the installation and removal of tires to ensure people do not leave them on year-round, and set a mandatory tire tread benchmark so that worn-out tires are not continuously used every year. In November, the Province of Quebec made winter tires mandatory in an attempt to reduce preventable accidents and fatalities on that province’s highways.
