Opposition cautions Premier not to dismiss economic summit idea

The Official Opposition again challenged the provincial government to hold an economic summit including industry, business, labour and government to discuss the current economic crisis and steps that need to be taken in Newfoundland and Labrador to address the negative downturn. Opposition Finance Critic Kelvin Parsons brought the idea to the floor of the House of Assembly earlier today.

“It is obvious that with the economic situation taking place in our province today, it would certainly be beneficial to hold a forum where all interested parties can contribute to what needs to be done to weather this economic storm,” said Mr. Parsons. “Businesses that have contacted our office see merit in such a discussion, however, for some reason the premier doesn’t seem receptive to the idea. This is short-sighted and non-inclusive.”

Over the past few weeks, Abitibi-Bowater closed their mill in Grand Falls-Windsor; Wabush Mines announced cutbacks and layoffs of 160 workers; IOC announced a one month closure of their Labrador West operations and an indefinite delay of their $800 million expansion project; Vale Inco announced a one month closure of the Voisey’s Bay mine in July; the Come By Chance refinery expansion is on hold; and a second refinery in Placentia Bay has been shelved indefinitely.

“There are no political points to be scored in this process, just an opportunity to hear the concerns and try to find solutions to the obvious problems that exist. I would hope the premier reconsiders his go it alone approach and chair this type of summit in search of options and opportunities for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
