The Williams Government has no proactive plan in
place to deal with the growing economic crisis and that was evident under
questioning today in the House of Assembly, says Opposition Finance Critic
Kelvin Parsons.
During question period, Parsons asked the Ministers
of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Natural Resources and Innovation, Trade and
Rural Development about the impact the economic crisis would have on their
respective departments. Parsons noted that the fishery is experiencing
great uncertainty and a lack of borrowing capacity; layoffs are taking
place in the mining and forestry sectors; the price of oil is dropping
having an impact on the commuting workforce; and projects such as Hebron
and the Lower Churchill still face uncertainties before development can
occur.
“I was surprised today to learn that despite the
growing economic crisis in our province and country, this government
appears to have no plans in place to deal with the situation,” said Mr.
Parsons. “It appears they have a wait and see attitude and are unwilling
to do anything that shows foresight or proactive planning.
“Each of the three ministers indicated they were
monitoring the situation and believe the economy will weather this crisis.
Monitoring the situation is not sufficient and there appears to be little
or no consultation taking place with industry or business groups to
determine what action may be necessary in the future should help be
required.
“In the spirit of good economic planning, I encourage
government to take this issue more seriously and begin developing plans to
deal with potential economic fallout. I would hope these plans will never
have to be used, but it never hurts to be prepared. It’s best to be
proactive instead of reactive.”
