Opposition again challenges government to bring forward
mandatory air inspections in schools

The time has come for government to conduct mandatory air quality inspections in schools and post-secondary institutions and have those reports posted on the internet for parents and students to review, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.

Jones notes that every year there are school closures due to poor air quality that catch school officials unprepared. Most recently, both Frank Roberts Junior High and St. George’s Elementary in Conception Bay South closed due to mould and air quality issues. Last year it was a school in La Scie; the year before that it was schools in Corner Brook and Upper Island Cove.

“I don’t understand why government is so hesitant to conduct mandatory air quality inspections and make those reports public,” said Ms. Jones. “Our office attempted to get information regarding air quality at College of the North Atlantic campuses and schools across the province, but was told it would cost over $700.00. The current inspection process is not working effectively and improvements must be made.

“Government is willing to place water quality and food inspection reports on the internet, yet is charging excessive fees to get something as basic as air quality inspection reports on our schools. An open and accountable government would want parents and students to have the opportunity to ensure their school environment is healthy. While the minister appears unwilling to consider implementing either of these recommendations, I certainly encourage her to review the current policies that obviously are not working.”
