The rate of youth suicides in Newfoundland and
Labrador is another indication of the importance of seriously addressing
the gap in youth mental health services in our province, says Opposition
Leader Yvonne Jones.
Jones released youth suicide statistics earlier today
in the House of Assembly that show how serious mental health issues can be
on young people. The statistics indicate that 18 young people committed
suicide in the province over the last three years and approximately 1000
young people in Newfoundland and Labrador attempt suicide annually.
“To show that government is listening and
recognizing youth mental health as a serious problem, a child and youth
mental health plan must be developed,” said Ms. Jones. “Other
provinces across Canada have taken this approach which has included
designed treatment centres and specialized services. There is no reason
why Newfoundland and Labrador should not provide similar treatments.”
Jones also noted that a statement of claim in the
courts from a family in central Newfoundland shows the frustration of
people dealing with youth mental health issues. “Our province spends the
second lowest amount per capita on mental health services in the country
and young people are falling through the cracks. This is certainly not
acceptable and must be examined to determine whether new approaches can be
more effective.
“The Child and Youth Advocate has contacted our
office and indicated that her office will be conducting an investigation
into the case of this central Newfoundland family. I will be meeting with
the advocate tomorrow morning to discuss this issue further. The Minister
of Health has stated that he has still not reviewed this statement of
claim and I hope he will take the time over the next couple of days to
seriously review the circumstances and allegations that led to this
situation.”
