Gynecology Oncologists a necessity that must remain in our health care system

The resignation of the province’s three gynecology oncologists and news that they will not be accepting any new patients is a disaster in the making for women’s health in Newfoundland and Labrador, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.

This summer, the province’s only three gynecology oncologists tendered their resignation due to resources and patient care issues. The resignations of the three doctors becomes effective in December, however, no new patients requiring their services will be accepted.

“These three doctors have continuously stated that they are willing to stay and practice in Newfoundland and Labrador if government addresses the list of concerns that they have related to resources and patient care issues,” said Ms. Jones. “This is a very serious issue that directly impacts the health of women in this province, yet there seems to be very little urgency given to this matter by the minister. I am truly disappointed that government has not resolved this situation by now.

“If these three doctors do not have their issues addressed and are forced to leave our province, women will die. There is no way to sugarcoat this situation, it is a pending disaster to female health services in Newfoundland and Labrador. The minister seems to be treating this as a game of chicken, but for the women who have contacted our office with their concerns, I can assure everyone that this is a very serious problem that will have disastrous consequences.”

Jones noted that the Canadian Health Consumer Index report released yesterday indicated that the five year cancer survival rate in Newfoundland and Labrador lags behind the other provinces, and more services are needed to strengthen our system. A further reduction in cancer specialists will further negatively impact on patients in this province.

“Measures need to be taken to ensure these doctors stay in our province. The longer this situation is allowed to unfold without any resolution, more women will have their health and lives compromised.”
