Jones pleased with signing of coastal stewardship agreement

The signing of coastal stewardship agreements by the towns of St. Lewis, Mary’s Harbour and Red Bay to protect eider duck habitats in the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair again demonstrates the commitment of coastal Labrador residents in protecting local wildlife and the natural environment, says MHA Yvonne Jones.

“Our region has a strong attachment to the natural environment and the wildlife that share our coastlines,” said Ms. Jones. “Residents of our area have always respected the importance of nature and ensured that we nurture the growth of these resources in every way possible. The signing of these agreements to protect the eider duck population is another example of local people strengthening the environment in which they live on a daily basis.”

Jones says the agreements have no impact on the traditional rights of land users or their hunting and trapping activities. The next step in the process is for communities to work together with residents to develop consultation policies to protect the bird population while balancing traditional rights.

The Mayor St. Lewis, Annie Rumbolt, said the signing of these agreements is positive for the region. “I certainly agree with this plan and believe the entire region will benefit over the long-term.”

The Deputy Mayor of Mary’s Harbour, Ford Rumbolt, also expressed his support for the coastal stewardship agreement. “We have worked hard on this for a long-time and I am pleased to see it happen. This is a positive step for the area and an important move that will protect the area’s duck population.”

“We must continue to work together to ensure a healthy and vibrant duck population in our region. Every species of wildlife is important to our environment and our region’s commitment to protecting these animals shows they will have a strong future on the coast of Labrador,” said MHA Jones.
