Government must be more creative in protecting local manufacturing companies

The provincial government has an opportunity to protect the long-term future of manufacturing operations such as Sutreen Hardwoods, but is doing little to ensure the company has access to a secure wood supply in this province, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.

Currently, Sutreen Hardwoods in Eastport is forced to import 80 per cent of their wood supply used to manufacture cabinets, mouldings and hardwood flooring. With the closure of the AbitibiBowater mill in Grand Falls-Windsor and timber rights returning to the province, wood supplies are available that could help secure the long-term future of this company.

“This company is a success story that is producing a world-class product, employing local people and putting benefits back into the local economy,” said Ms. Jones. “These are the companies that we need to help when there are solutions available. Unfortunately, the company is forced to import almost all of their wood supply from Quebec because they currently do not have access to a secure wood supply within the province. There are wood supplies available on former AbitibiBowater lands, but the provincial government is not providing access.

“If the provincial government is serious about growing local manufacturing operations throughout rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador, they must get more creative and help companies overcome business challenges. If there are wood supplies available in this province to help a local business, government should work with that company to achieve those solutions.

“I challenge the minister to look at this situation and ensure every option is considered that will allow this local success story to continue well into the future. I recently visited the Sutreen facility and I have nothing but praise for the owners and their employees. With the number of young people working in this specialized field, they certainly have a bright future. I can only hope the provincial government will show the same commitment and provide options that will allow access to a local wood source.”
