Same problem, different school

The latest discovery of mould at Holy Cross Elementary in Holyrood is the most recent school closure that reinforces the need for an improved inspection process, says Opposition Education Critic Roland Butler.

The Official Opposition has been lobbying for mandatory air quality inspections in all schools throughout the province and for inspection reports to be made public for the past two years. The Auditor General’s (AG) report released earlier this year also verified this need.

“I will continue to raise this issue to point out the inadequacies of the current inspection process,” said Mr. Butler. “It’s time for the minister to admit the current process is not working. If everything was fine, we wouldn’t have new mould discoveries at schools throughout the province every couple of months. I again challenge the minister to bring forward a more stringent inspection process and make those reports available to the public.

“As a result of this latest mould problem, more parents, students and teachers will be displaced and inconvenienced. I predict there will be many more instances like this until government finally accepts that their inspection process is flawed and makes the necessary improvements.”
