Situation
in Isolated Communities in Labrador becoming desperate and Government
failing to act
MHA
for Cartwright – L’Anse au Clair, Yvonne Jones, is urgently calling on
government to act now on behalf of three communities in her district
that are left stranded with no medical, mail or food deliveries for 16
days. Due to unusually mild temperatures and bad weather conditions,
residents of Norman Bay, William’s Harbour and Black Tickle are unable
to travel out of their communities by snowmobile and because of bad
weather conditions for days, there has been no air service to these
communities.
“Nowhere else in the province would this situation be tolerated and it
should not be tolerated in Labrador. Government has an obligation to
put something in place to provide residents with the basic necessities
of life and they are very slow to act. My office has received call
after call regarding various desperate situations being faced. There is
one resident who is completely out her prescribed insulin and is making
due with an old prescription that was not successful for her
initially.”
“The request for service has been made by my office and representatives
from these communities and the only response so far has been that there
is no money left in budget for helicopter time. This a lame excuse to
put forward, and this situation should be given priority and rectified
immediately.”
