Government continues to ignore message
of mismanagement outlined in AG report
Similar to past Auditor General (AG) reports,
government refuses to recognize that a lack of due diligence and
mismanagement is creating significant problems in programming right across
government, says Opposition Finance Critic Kelvin Parsons.
Parsons pointed to the numerous examples outlined in
this year’s AG’s review of government departments and agencies of incomplete
documentation, inadequate inspection and monitoring, lack of follow-up,
missed deadlines, ignored policies, breaches of legislation and a refusal to
fulfill commitments to reporting mechanisms.
“Every year this government tries to gloss over their
mismanagement practices and lack of due diligence in ensuring programming
runs efficiently, effectively and with the necessary financial prudence and
oversight,” said Mr. Parsons. “This year we again see a recurring theme of
government complacency and neglect. If lessons were being learned, the AG
would not have to cite so many of these examples each year in his report.
“This government appears to have real difficulty
maintaining the necessary inspection and monitoring protocols and this is
costing the taxpayers of the province significant amounts of money. In
addition, public safety is being compromised because the appropriate
follow-up processes and due diligence are not being done in acceptable
timeframes. One only has to look at the system currently in place in our
province to protect children and the number of problems identified and
highlighted in this report. If we cannot ensure that effective guidelines
are established and followed to protect the most vulnerable in this
province, government is certainly not doing its job.
“These types
of systemic problems have been highlighted again this year and we can only
hope more concrete action is taken to address these concerns. We look
forward to the AG’s update later this year and any improvements that will be
made. Hopefully, these types of problems will not be repeated in 2011.”- 30 -
