Butler still receiving complaints about
residential oil tank replacement program grants
The deadline to have oil tanks inspected and registered in the province
passed seven months ago, yet there are still people who have completed the
process, replaced their tanks, but have not received their rebate cheques,
says Roland Butler, Opposition Environment and Conservation Critic and MHA
for the District of Port de Grave.
“I am still receiving calls from low income earners who replaced their tanks
and submitted their rebate applications as far back as September and
October, but have not received their grant,” said Mr. Butler. “Many of these
people purchased their tanks with the assurance that they would receive a
rebate from government. Some of these families are struggling financially to
deal with the extra burden that was placed on them this year by these tank
replacement costs and could use this rebate to help get them through this
winter season.”
Butler says he questioned Finance Minister Tom Marshall regarding the
payments during the fall session of the House of Assembly. The minister
confirmed that there wasn’t enough money allocated to the program and funds
would be transferred to ensure payments were made to people who qualified.
“I would ask
the minister to provide an update to these people as to when they can expect
to receive their rebate cheques. These families complied with government
requirements in good faith and they simply want what was promised to them by
government. These delays are unacceptable and should be dealt with
immediately.”- 30 -
