Funding approval for new town hall in Isle aux Morts good news for the community

Government’s funding approval for a new town hall in the community of Isle aux Morts is positive news for the community and a great reward for the hard work of everyone involved in putting together the proposals and information related to the project, says Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile.

The Town of Isle aux Morts has been looking for provincial government funding to construct a new town hall for several years. The town acquired a piece of land across from the existing town hall and all pre-engineering work has been completed. The existing building will now serve as a dedicated fire hall for the people of the community. Funding is being provided through the 2010 Municipal Capital Works Program on a 90/10 cost-shared basis.

“I am very pleased that after three years of hard work and dedication this project is finally becoming a reality,” said Mr. Parsons. “Mayor Raymond Lefrense, Town Clerk Lydia Francis and the entire council were very diligent in developing the background work and ensuring they provided the necessary information to receive this funding. This will be a great addition and will allow town work to be completed in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner.”

Parsons noted that a number of issues were raised related to the existing structure, including safety issues associated with having both the fire hall and town hall in the same building.

“I want to congratulate the people of Isle aux Morts on receiving this funding and thank the minister for listening to our concerns and proposals on this matter. This is a very important piece of infrastructure and something that the community and residents certainly deserve.”
