Williams Government anything but open and accountable!

The Williams Government’s claim that it is open and accountable is absolutely false and their continuous actions prove they hinder the release of information in every manner possible, says Opposition Justice Critic Kelvin Parsons. Parsons was responding to government’s claim that the Canadian Newspaper Association awarded a grade of B- to the government for their response to four requests submitted by the association in a recent audit.

“The trend of this government is to delay, charge fees and put up as many roadblocks as possible to avoid releasing information to the people of this province,” said Mr. Parsons. “They have even gone to court to block the Access to Information Commissioner’s ability to review documents. How they can claim to be open and accountable is unfathomable.”

Parsons says while they may have responded to four requests during this audit, if a larger scale evaluation was undertaken it would prove that this government tries to hide information in every way possible.

“I have to challenge these results because of our own experience in dealing with this government and their willingness to release information. If there was a more comprehensive audit undertaken, I am certain this government would receive an F- in flying colours. It is one thing to claim you are open and accountable, it is quite another to practice what you preach. I would encourage the Canadian Newspaper Association to undertake a more comprehensive audit of this government to recognize their grading error.”
