Major road repairs needed between Red
Bay and the L’Anse au Clair
The section of highway between Red Bay and L’Anse au
Clair is in horrible condition and something must be done immediately to
deal with the huge potholes and lack of signage warning commuters of the
problems, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of
Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair.
The section of road between Red Bay and L’Anse au Clair
is paved, but is deteriorating very quickly. Since the opening of phase
three of the Trans Labrador Highway linking southern Labrador with Happy
Valley-Goose Bay, traffic volumes have tripled while road maintenance
budgets have not increased.
“Eight people have already complained to my office that
they have damaged their vehicles because of the large potholes in this
section of road and the lack of signage warning of the danger,” said Ms.
Jones. “I’ve brought this matter to the attention of Transportation and
Works Minister Tom Hedderson and I am hopeful he will recognize that an
immediate investment is required to address the impact that increased
traffic flow is having on this section of highway.
“By not
placing appropriate signage along the highway warning commuters of the poor
road conditions and not providing appropriate funding to address these
problems, I feel government has an obligation to compensate people for the
damage that has been done to their vehicles. Unless action is taken
immediately to address these growing potholes and deteriorating road
conditions, I fear safety will be compromised. As more people use this road
in the coming weeks the problem will continue to get worse.”- 30 -
