Government must help displaced workers: Joyce

Liberal Critic for Innovation, Business and Rural Development, Jim Bennett, says the business community in the province is losing confidence in the Dunderdale Government’s ability to maintain a strong business environment in the province.

The MHA for the District of St. Barbe was reacting to a recent report from the Canadian Independent Business Federation (CFIB) that business optimism in Newfoundland and Labrador is the lowest in the country, marking a fourth consecutive decline.

“This is not good news and compounded with the doom and gloom speech the Premier presented to the Board of Trade earlier this week, I would say business optimism will fall even further. This contrasts with the national rate which rose in the last report.”

Bennett pointed out that the barometer for business is expected to dip with the anticipated harsh budget the Premier and her government will be bringing down this spring. “Businesses, especially smaller ones in rural areas are facing great challenges and I don’t think they have any confidence that this Premier has a strategy and action plan that encourages strong business investment and optimism here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
