Rumbolt Inspiration & Education Award presented to
Scott Hancock
Liberal MHA Yvonne Jones presented the first
ever Rumbolt Inspiration and Education Award to Scott Hancock on December
21, 2011 at Labrador Straits Academy.
“This award is offered to a student who has inspired others by overcoming
personal challenges and continuing on with their education,” said Jones.
“Scott has demonstrated courage and determination and has set an example for
other students to follow. He has a positive attitude, excels at school and
sports and has reached out to many of his peers. Scott inspired me and I
congratulate him.”
Jones noted that the purpose of the award is to motivate students while
rewarding those who have overcome significant obstacles.
“It was my pleasure to present this award to Scott,” said Jones. “He is a
dedicated and inspirational student who maintains a strong academic standing
while being involved in all aspects of school life.”
The Rumbolt Inspiration & Education Award is a new award and named after
Eliza Rumbolt, Grandmother of Yvonne Jones. Ms. Rumbolt’s battle with cancer
was one of courage and strength as she struggled to maintain a home and
support a family.
“I was always inspired by
the stories about my Grandmother Rumbolt, of the kind and caring person she
was,” said Jones. “Despite her own struggles it was always said that she
started everyday with a smile and a determination to make it better then the
last. Through my own experience in the last year, I not only remembered
those words that were told to me by Grandmother’s sister Clara Penny, and
Grandma's Children, I practiced her positive nature and held her
determination.”
Jones noted that she
established the award in memory of her Grandmother but also to recognize the
many people in the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair who inspired her
by reaching out and offering support despite their own challenges.
“This award is to salute my
Grandmother but also to recognize a younger generation of people in
Cartwright- L’Anse au Clair who are not just leading positive lives but
reaching out and helping others as well,” stated Jones.
The award will be presented
annually to one student from Labrador Straits Academy and one student from
the South Labrador coast combined high schools. Each award includes a $200
cheque and a glass display engraved with their name. Jones says the Coastal
Award will be presented at a later date.- 30 -
